CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Illinois has signed five junior college transfers to help shore up its struggling football team.

Illini head coach Tim Beckman said Wednesday that he added three defensive players from California schools and a pair of offensive players from Iowa to the Illinois roster.

The signings include 6-foot wide receiver Martize Barr and 275-pound offensive lineman Dallas Hinkhouse from Iowa Western Community College.

Barr joins a thin receiving corps. The top target was Ryan Lankford with just 37 catches for 469 yards.

The Illini also signed 290-pound defensive tackle Abe Cajuste from Victor Valley College and 205-pound linebacker Eric Finney from College of the Canyons. Safety Zane Petty from American River College also signed.

Beckman said all of the players should help fill immediate needs after a 2-10 season.
