MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) — New Idaho head coach Paul Petrino will be paid at least $390,000 annually in a three-year contract approved by the Idaho State Board of Education. The board voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the package for Petrino, who was the offensive coordinator at Arkansas until taking the Vandals job. Petrino also stands to gain from successfully rebuilding an Idaho program that's in tatters following a 1-11 season that included former coach Robb Akey's firing after eight games. With bonuses for bowl games, Top 25 rankings and academic achievement, among other things, he could earn as much as $546,713. With his base salary of $175,000, Petrino stands to earn about $15,000 more annually than Akey. Petrino's contract could be extended to a fourth and fifth year if Idaho averages at least 10,000 paying fans at home. Petrino's final season at Arkansas was a tumultuous one. His brother, Bobby Petrino, was fired for hiring his mistress to a position in the athletic department and initially lying about her presence during an April 1 motorcycle accident. Paul Petrino served as an assistant coach at Idaho in the early 1990s and has also coached at Utah State, Illinois, Louisville and with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons. In his first head coaching job at Idaho, Petrino can increase his salary by resurrecting the program. He'll get an additional $13,400 for winning at least seven games, $10,000 if he wins national coach of the year honors and $100,000 for an appearance in a BCS bowl. Petrino would get $25,000 if the Vandals go to a non-BCS bowl. The last time Idaho played in a bowl game was in 2009, when it won the Humanitarian Bowl during Akey's lone winning season. Akey was 20-50 in just over five years with the program.
