Referee Ron Cherry is leaving the field to work behind the scenes with the Atlantic Coast Conference. And that has given league commissioner John Swofford some time to reminisce on Cherry’s memorable penalty call that created plenty of chuckles a few years back.
It was during a 2007 game between North Carolina State and Maryland when Cherry said that a Wolfpack player had committed a personal foul and was “giving him the business.”
Speaking Thursday during the ACC preseason media days, Swofford said Cherry will assist league supervisor of football officials Dennis Hennigan. Then he referenced Cherry’s giving-him-the-business call.
Swofford said a league staffer questioned a day later whether the league should reprimand Cherry for not following protocol in his choice of words. Swofford -- probably still chuckling -- declined.
“I said, we're not reprimanding Ron,” Swofford said. “Everybody in America knew exactly what he meant. That was the greatest description of a penalty call that I've ever heard in the history of the game.”
