AP Explains: American football with niche following in Japan

TOKYO (AP) — Japan has been absorbed for several weeks by a late hit during a college football game.

The tackle earlier this month in a game between Japanese teams — Nihon University and Kwansei Gakuin University — has been repeatedly shown on television and social media sites and talked about by many who know almost nothing about the American sport.

McSorley confident offense can roll without Barkley, Gesicki

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Trace McSorley holds numerous Penn State passing records and will have more chances to add to his legacy with co-stars Saquon Barkley and Mike Gesicki gone.

But finding go-to teammates that can replace Barkley's and Gesicki's production — nearly 40 percent of the offense since 2015 — didn't top McSorley's priority list during spring practice. Instead, he spent the last month reminding his teammates on the offensive side of the ball that they still have plenty to prove.

Alabama-USC to open 2020 football season in Arlington, Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Alabama and Southern California will meet in Arlington, Texas to open the 2020 college football season.

The game announced Wednesday will be a rematch of the 2016 AdvoCare Classic at AT&T Stadium. The Crimson Tide won 52-7 in the programs' eighth meeting but first in more than three decades.

Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne says the matchup on Sept. 5, 2020 gives fans "a bowl-like experience coming out of the gates."
