Utah State's Dominik Eberle is one of several kickers to catch some bad breaks during the bowl season.
Eberle missed four field-goals in a 26-20 overtime loss to New Mexico State in the Arizona Bowl on Dec. 29. One of the misses was in overtime, and New Mexico State's Larry Rose III scored the game-winner on a 21-yard run shortly after that. Eberle had only missed two field goals all season heading into the game.
There were plenty more struggles on New Year's Day.
LSU missed two relatively short field goals, costing the Tigers six points in a 21-17 Citrus Bowl loss to Notre Dame. Connor Culp missed a 22-yarder with 7:45 left in the first quarter, then Jack Gonsulin missed a 37-yarder with 2:00 left in the second. Gonsulin made a 17-yarder with 2:03 remaining to give the Tigers a 17-14 lead.
Central Florida got away with some mistakes in a 34-27 win over Auburn in the Peach Bowl.
Matthew Wright 25-yard field goal with 6:58 left in the fourth quarter was blocked, then he missed a 38-yarder with 2:18 remaining to keep Auburn in the game. Central Florida held on when Antwan Collier intercepted a pass by Auburn’s Jarrett Stidham in the end zone in the final minute.
South Carolina’s Parker White missed a 48-yarder with 1:43 remaining that could have put the Gamecocks up 10 over Michigan in the Outback Bowl, but their defense held in a 26-19 win.
