Michigan State took another hit before kicking off against Rutgers.
Defensive lineman Malik McDowell, who left last week's loss at Illinois with an apparent leg injury, was not in uniform Saturday for the Spartans when they hosted the Scarlet Knights in a matchup of teams without a Big Ten win.
The 6-foot-6, 276-pound junior has been projected as a first-round pick if he enters the NFL draft. He has 24 1/2 tackles for losses, including 7 1/2 sacks, in his career.
Michigan State did have banged-up quarterback Tyler O'Connor in the lineup at the start of the game, when there were a lot of empty seats at Spartan Stadium. Tickets were being sold on the secondary market for less than $10 and apparently that still was not cheap enough for some people to attend the lackluster game.
