ESPN’s Chris Berman was on the Massachusetts sideline Saturday at Tennessee to show his support for longtime friend Mark Whipple, who coaches the Minutemen.

Berman and Whipple went to Brown together in the late 1970s and built a friendship that has lasted through their respective careers. Whipple was Brown's starting quarterback in 1977 and 1978, and he also was a member of the 1976 Brown team that won the school's first Ivy League title.

Berman wasn’t at Saturday’s game in any official staffing capacity but could be seen wearing a UMass hat and shirt.

Berman had served as a guest coach during UMass’ spring football game. The longtime ESPN personality has taken a reduced role with the network this year.
