LANGSTON, Okla. (AP) — Dwone Sanders has been promoted from defensive coordinator to head coach at Langston.

Athletic director Mike Garrett announced Tuesday that Sanders would take charge of the Lions after coach Mickey Joseph's contract was not renewed following a 6-4 season. Langston went 7-3 in in 2011 in its first season under Joseph, a former Nebraska quarterback,

Garrett, the former Southern California athletic director in his first year on the job at Langston, says he believes Sanders can "guide a good football program and make it a dominant one."

The Lions play in the NAIA.
