Illinois fires coach Tim Beckman 1 week before season opener

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — A week before the start of the football season, a difficult summer for the University of Illinois became chaotic as coach Tim Beckman was fired after an investigation found he tried to influence medical decisions and pressure players to play with injuries.

Beckman's firing follows the unexpected resignations this month of the top two officials on campus, revelations that they'd used private emails accounts to avoid public scrutiny of school business, and a pair of lawsuits in which former women's basketball and women's soccer players claim they were mistreated by coaches.

The Gamecocks coach said he was happier with the offensive showing in the second stadium scrimmage of fall camp. However, he said Connor Mitch, Perry Orth, Michael Scarnecchia and Lorenzo Nunez didn't separate themselves in the race.

Alabama punter hopes to improve on 'amazing' freshman season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — JK Scott's bio after one season as Alabama's punter takes up a full page in the media guide and begins with heady praise.

"Produced the best season for a punter in Alabama football history..."

The third-ranked Crimson Tide sophomore might not get recognized much on campus — that's a punter's lot, after all — but his booming punts made him one of the team's most acclaimed players straight out of high school in Denver.
